AC Blue is a solution containing 6% by volume of copper carried in solution. The active ingredient in AC Blue is a biologically active form of copper ion, Cu2+, held in a unique carrier known as a hydrotrophe.

How does AC Blue work?

Copper is a well known and accepted algicide and its effectiveness is based on the principle that organic contaminants will die soon after contact with elemental copper ion. The copper ion attacks the algae membrane to inhibit growth and interferes with the photosynthesis process resulting in starvation of the algae. Copper also causes deactivation of the micro-organisms through interference with the metabolic pathways. Not all species of algae and bacteria have equal sensitivity to copper ion.

What are the advantages of AC Blue over other forms of copper?

AC Blue is self-dispersing and quickly becomes evenly distributed throughout the water area, it will remain in suspension indefinitely and it will remain biologically active until consumed by demand. There is no need for agitation or expensive equipment to treat ponds or tanks when using AC Blue. When used in water, copper products other than AC Blue rapidly sink to the bottom of the pond or tank - causing an uneven treatment, which may accelerate problems rather than cure them. Much of the suspended algae remain untreated and excess copper at the bottom of the pond will create further problems within the ecosystem. There are a few chelated copper products on the market that remain in suspension for a short while but these have chemical bonds which often interfere with biological activity. The bond has to be designed to break down quickly, after which the copper recrystallizes and sinks to the bottom of the pond.

Untreated copper will very quickly combine with calcium in water and will as a result become biologically inactive. The unique nature of the AC Blue carrier is that it can prevent combination with calcium whilst allowing the copper to remain biologically active. The hydrotrophe does not have to break down and can remain in place to ensure that AC Blue remains in suspension. Only AC Blue can maintain the biologically active copper ion in solution and achieve even distribution in the pond.

 

AC Blue in concentrations of 0.1 to 1.0 (Cu) is an effective drinking water treatment to eliminate bacteria. As Copper reacts relatively slowly the best site for application for AC Blue is in ponds and reservoirs or in longer-term storage tanks. AC Blue is an ideal pre-treatment in reservoirs to reduce contamination at source prior to final treatment with chlorine or chlorine dioxide at the distribution centres.

Lakes and Ponds

AC Blue helps to control algae, bacteria and pond weed in lakes, ponds and in irrigation reservoirs and canals. Algae can give rise to unsightliness and bad odours, can cause problems with fouling pumping systems but most importantly may often present a health hazard.

Ornamental Features and Golf Course (and other) Hazards

AC Blue is the ideal product for use in ornamental features and decorative ponds including those in golf courses and other recreational areas. AC Blue is unaffected by UV and at recommended dose application rates will not cause any corrosion problems. It is at least algistatic at dose rates that are safe to use in fishponds and will control algae in decorative ponds - although because all conditions cannot be predetermined Scotmas always recommends that the product be introduced at low levels in order to test compatibility with all plants and fish in any pond.

Agriculture and Aquaculture

Irrigation pipes and nozzles can be kept clear of organic fouling at very low cost. Suppress odours in livestock operations. Livestock drinking water treatment, general wash-down disinfectant and foot bath for pigs and cattle.  Control algae in fishponds.

Wastewater Treatment

AC Blue controls bacterial odours and enhances biological decomposition of waste. No specialised equipment or training may be required to use AC Blue in a number of locations.
