Chlorine Dioxide

The most flexible and effective biocide available

Applications for Chlorine Dioxide are as diverse as the destruction of hydrogen sulphide in gas pipelines, through to the purification of water in critical care areas in hospitals, and removal of mould and fungal contamination in flooded and fire damaged buildings.

Advantages over other Oxidising Biocides

The primary chemical reaction of Chlorine Dioxide based compounds is through oxidation. There are other oxidants in the market-place, such as ozone and hydrogen peroxide based compounds.

Why is Chlorine Dioxide better?

Chlorine Dioxide’s oxidation is more selective, in that it is highly reactive with certain amino acids that make up proteins, the structural and enzymatic components of life. Chlorine Dioxide also provides a better downstream residual, making it the ideal biocide for use in water systems, providing strong biocidal action with sustainable residual effects and low environmental toxicity.

What advantages does Chlorine Dioxide have over Chlorine?

•    Chlorine Dioxide is a more

      powerful oxidant. It is therefore

      at least 2.6 times more

      powerful per ppm.
•    Chlorine Dioxide acts only by

      oxidation. Chlorine will combine

      to produce harmful Chlorinated

      by-products, e.g. Chlorinated

      phenols and THM’s. Many of

      these by-products are

      recognised carcinogens.
•    Chlorine Dioxide does not

      hydrolyse to form an acid,

      and is therefore less corrosive

      in situ.
•    The effectiveness of Chlorine is

      very pH dependent. Chlorine

Dioxide is effective at all pH’s

      below 12.
•    Chlorine Dioxide has been

      found to be effective against

      complex organisms, e.g. cysts

      and protozoa. Chlorine is not.
•    Chlorine Dioxide removes

      Biofilm. Chlorine does not.
